Ex-Dolphins, others sue NFL over concussions

MIAMI -- Nearly two dozen former NFL players are suing the league over severe and permanent brain damage they say is linked to concussions suffered on the job.

The complaint follows a similar one filed earlier this week in Atlanta. It is the latest in a series of lawsuits filed against the NFL in recent months by past players.

The lawsuit was filed Thursday in Miami on behalf of ex-Miami Dolphins team members Patrick Surtain, Oronde Gadsden and 19 other players. Most now live in Florida.

The suit accuses the NFL of deliberately omitting or concealing evidence linking concussions and long-term neurological problems.

The NFL denies the charges and says player safety has long been a priority.

The former players are seeking a jury trial and unspecified damages.

Ben Roethlisberger will be resting his sprained ankle through the weekend as the Steelers named Charlie Batch their starting quarterback for Saturday's game against the St. Louis Rams, the Pittsburgh Tribune-Review is reporting.

Roethlisberger was nursing a high right ankle sprain when he passed for 330 yards in a 20-3 loss to San Francisco on Monday night., but also turned over the ball four times.

He said Wednesday that he came out of the game better than he anticipated, but offensive coordinator Bruce Arians said the long cross-country plane trip back home aggravated swelling in the ankle.

Lakers’ Barnes to Clips: Stop dunk celebrations

EL SEGUNDO, Calif. -- For the first time in years, the title of "Best NBA Team in Los Angeles" is up for grabs as the Los Angeles Clippers revamped their roster this training camp while the Los Angeles Lakers have been unable to shake up theirs.

Lakers forward Matt Barnes has seen the matchup from both sides of the tracks. As a rookie in 2003-04, he played for a Clippers team that went 28-54. Last year, his eighth season in the league, he joined the Lakers as a free agent and the team went 57-25.

Barnes said the Clippers should be feeling some positive vibes after adding Chris Paul, Chauncey Billups, Caron Butler and re-signing DeAndre Jordan this month, but thinks they may have gone overboard in showing that enthusiasm.

"They definitely have a much improved team here and are looking to make a push towards the playoffs," Barnes said Thursday after the Clippers beat the Lakers in a pair of preseason games on Monday and Wednesday. "They have a lot of reason to be excited, but all the celebration after dunks and all that kind of stuff, I mean, I just kind of think it looks amazing and it makes 'SportsCenter,' but I mean, let's just play basketball."

Count Barnes as one person not exactly thrilled by the "Lob City" Clippers.

"They act like they won the dunk contest after every dunk," Barnes said. "So, as players, people aren't going to tolerate that."

Barnes showed how much he appreciated the celebration when he picked up a flagrant 1 foul for pushing Blake Griffin to the floor with 6:48 remaining in the third quarter on Wednesday.

It was just one example of the overall chippy play between the two teams. Lakers forward Pau Gasol offered an explanation for all the hard fouls after the game.

"I think we were upset that they were flopping a little too much," said Gasol.

Barnes expanded upon Gasol's claim and pointed to the criticism and Griffin specifically.

"He's an amazing athlete and an amazing player but he does flop a lot," Barnes said. "You're too big and too strong to be doing that. Then he wants to talk.

"... He's a special athlete. Probably one of the best athletes I've ever seen, but all the flopping is unnecessary. That's the way he plays and it works too, they call it, so you can't be mad at him for it."

However, Barnes was mad, or at least annoyed, that his foul on Griffin was determined to be a flagrant by the referees.

"I looked at [the replay] and yeah, my arms did get extended but [Griffin] flailed everywhere like I threw him to half-court," Barnes said. "I just think the refs are so quick to judge. Even after looking at the replay, I heard initially they wanted to call a flagrant 2 and I'm just like, 'Are you kidding me?'

"I guess there's just no hard fouls anymore. It was just a hard foul."

Barnes, who was suspended for a game last year for escalating an on-court altercation after he pushed Dallas Mavericks assistant coach Terry Stotts to the ground when the coach tried to restrain him, said he was only assessed the flagrant foul on Wednesday because of his reputation.

"That's exactly what it was yesterday, my reputation," Barnes said. "I've fouled people much harder than that. That's all it is. ... I have a reputation for stuff I've done, so I've earned it, so I can't be mad at no one but myself, but that definitely wasn't a flagrant foul."

Colts would secure No. 1 pick with Week 17 loss

Posted on December 23rd, 2011 by ESPN.com

Updated: December 23, 2011, 12:30 PM ET

The suddenly surging Indianapolis Colts are guaranteed to have the No. 1 overall draft pick should they lose their final game of the season.

The Colts started 0-13 but their second straight win was a stunner, 19-16 over the AFC South champion Houston Texans on Thursday.

Still, if Indianapolis loses at Jacksonville on Jan. 1, they would finish with at least a share of the league's worst record at 2-14 and have the top pick in the draft by virtue of strength-of-schedule tiebreaker.

Both St. Louis and Minnesota are 2-12 heading into Saturday's games, but the Colts' .547 strength-of-schedule percentage is only going to worsen after playing the 4-10 Jaguars. The Rams' percentage is .587 and the Vikings' .587.

If the Colts beat Jacksonville and the Rams and Vikings lose their last two, the Colts would not get the top pick. If the Colts beat the Jags and St. Louis and Minnesota also finish 3-13, the No. 1 pick would go to the Colts'.

Minnesota has games left at Washington (5-9) and at home against Chicago (7-7), and St. Louis finishes at Pittsburgh and at home against San Francisco.

New Jersey Nets center Brook Lopez is expected to return to game action in six to eight weeks after undergoing surgery Friday to repair a non-displaced stress fracture of the fifth metatarsal of the right foot, the team announced.

"A single screw was inserted into the bone to stabilize the fracture and speed up the healing process," foot specialist Dr. Martin O'Malley, who performed the procedure at the Hospital for Special Surgery in Manhattan, said in a statement. "He was placed in a boot and will walk with the aid of crutches. Brook will begin his rehab in two weeks."

O'Malley performed the surgery with Nets team orthopedist Dr. Riley Williams III.

The 23-year-old Lopez was hurt during the first half of Wednesday night's preseason game against the New York Knicks. His surgery came just three days before the Nets open up the 66-game regular season in Washington.

The Nets didn't waste any time finding a short-term replacement, trading a 2015 second-round pick to the Utah Jazz in exchange for 32-year-old veteran Mehmet Okur. The 6-foot-11 Okur will make almost $10.9 million this season in what is the final year of his contract.

The Nets also officially added swingman DeShawn Stevenson. The 30-year-old veteran, who was a member of the NBA champion Dallas Mavericks last season, will be signed for this season to the mini mid-level exception of $2.5 million, a league source told ESPNNewYork.com.

Given the six-to-eight-week time frame, Lopez likely would be able to return in mid-to-late February, assuming he doesn't have any setbacks. His identical twin, Robin Lopez, suffered the same injury in 2009 and returned after approximately seven weeks.

"It's definitely devastating," Nets point guard Deron Williams said Thursday. "Brook's a big part of our team. But there's one thing you learn in this business -- you can't control injuries. From what I understand, it's not that severe, so hopefully he'll be on the court soon."

A four-year pro, Lopez has never missed an NBA game. He has been rumored as the potential centerpiece in a blockbuster offer for Orlando Magic center Dwight Howard.

"I've seen star players go out before," Johnson said. "And the main thing is we have to play with a lot of urgency. We've got to play, nobody's going to give us any sympathy. We're not asking for any. We're missing one of our top two players, that's a fact. But we're going to suit up. We're going to be ready to go in Washington and hopefully give ourselves a chance to win."

Lopez averaged a career-high and team-best 20.4 points per game last season, and was intent on improving his career-worst average of 6.0 rebounds. In two preseason games against the Knicks, Lopez had 20 rebounds and looked to be well on his way to accomplishing that goal.

"Everybody is going to have to step their game up a little more," Williams said.
